The efforts of many people make Beth Am a warm and
nurturing spiritual home. We are delighted to have the opportunity
to introduce our professional staff.
SENIOR
RABBI ROBERT S. LEIB, formerly of Cape Town, South Africa,
joined Beth Am in 1989. Ordained at the Leo Baeck College in London
in 1986, Rabbi Leib is an active and enthusiastic religious leader
in both Beth Am and the greater Philadelphia community. He is
currently chair of the Rabbinic Advisory Committee of the Kehillah
of Old York Road; a member of the Board of Regents, Gratz College;
a board member of the Auerbach Central Agency for Jewish Education
(ACAJE); a member of the Board of Rabbis of Greater Phila. and
a member of the Old York Road Interfaith Ministerium.
ASSISTANT
RABBI LAWRENCE R. SERNOVITZ , Joined Beth Am in 2007, following
his ordination from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.
Rabbi Sernovitz holds a B.A. in English writing from the University
of Pittsburgh, where he also received a Certificate in Jewish
Studies; he earned a Masters Degree in Elementary Education from
Temple University. Prior to studying for the rabbinate, he taught
in Beth Am's religious school, served as our youth director, taught
at Gratz College and in the Cheltenham Township School District.
RABBI
EMERITUS HAROLD B. WAINTRUP served as Rabbi of Beth Am
for 40 years. As a teacher, friend, community leader and spiritual
guide, the more than 1,200 member families of Beth Am continue
to look to him for warmth and guidance.
CANTOR
ELENA ZARKH, formerly of Leningrad, joined Beth Am in 1985.
In addition to instituting special musical Shabbat services, she
leads both our Adult Volunteer Choir and our Children’s
Volunteer Choir. Cantor Zarkh was invested as Cantor by Hebrew
Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion, New York, in 1985.
KAREN
KANTOR was named Executive Director in January 2005, and
has been a member of Beth Am for more than 20 years, along with
her family. After having held a variety of leadership positions
here including congregation president, she became the first Coordinator
of the Kehillah of Old York Road in 1998. A project of the Jewish
Federation of Greater Philadelphia, the Kehillah organizes activities
designed to strengthen our Jewish community and facilitates cooperation
between 23 member institutions, their professional and lay leaders.
She has a B.A. in Journalism from Drake University and MBA in
Marketing from Temple University.
MIMI
POLIN FERRARO was named Beth Am’s Education Director
in 1995. She received a Bachelor of Music Degree from Temple University
and a Master’s Degree in Jewish Education from Gratz College.
She has been involved in Jewish Education since 1978.
SHERRIE
TURETSKY joined us in 2004 as Director of the Temple Beth
Torah School of Early Learning at Old York Road Temple - Beth
Am. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood
and Elementary Education and a Master’s Degree in Reading
from Arcadia University. She has a strong devotion to education
and is passionate about providing a Jewish foundation for young
children.
MARK
DAUGHERTY, our Musical Director, has served Beth Am since
1984. Mark Daugherty earned his Master’s Degree With Distinction
from The University of Rochester Eastman School of Music.
